2026 THEME

India stands at a defining moment in the evolution of its space and geospatial economy. Over the past decade, progressive policy liberalization, the National Geospatial Policy 2022, the Indian Space Policy 2023, Drone Rules 2021, Digital Public Infrastructure and increasing private sector participation have transformed the sector from a government-led capability to an emerging consumer led ecosystem. These reforms are already translating into economic opportunity, with India's Space and Geospatial market projected to grow from INR 26000 crore in 2021 to over INR 106 thousand crore by 2030, growing at a CAGR of approximately 17% driven by expanding domestic demand alongside a rapidly growing export market.

The next phase of growth requires more than expanding geospatial infrastructure or increasing data availability. It requires a Geospatial Knowledge Infrastructure (GKI): a trusted, interoperable and intelligent ecosystem that integrates space and geospatial assets, digital platforms, standards, institutions and talent into a shared national capability. As envisioned in the National Geospatial Policy 2022, GKI transforms geospatial from a technology domain into critical national infrastructure, enabling AI-driven innovation, informed decision-making, industrial growth and sustainable economic value.

India has already demonstrated significant progress in building this foundation. The country's improving position from the 27th in 2022, to 15th in the Geospatial Knowledge Infrastructure Readiness Index 2025, supported by policy reforms, digital transformation initiatives and a rapidly expanding private sector, reflects its transition towards a globally competitive space and geospatial ecosystem. The opportunity now is to convert these capabilities into sustained industrial growth, export leadership and strategic advantage.

Against this backdrop, GeoSmart India 2026, adopts Geospatial Knowledge Infrastructure as the central theme for advancing the industry's next phase of development- one focused on Commercialization, Commoditization and Competitiveness.
