In March, Russia took control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, in the ongoing clash with Ukraine. However, both countries have denied shelling the facility, while accusing each other. Moreover, the Kremlin on Monday called on the International community to put pressure on Ukraine and reduce the military tension at the power plant.
Consisting of six reactors, its total output is 5,700 MW with each reactor generating 950 MW. It produces one-fifth of Ukraine’s entire electricity and is responsible for supplying electricity to 4 million homes. It has come under the radar of the UN watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) amidst the growing conflict in its proximity.
On 29th August, European Space Imaging partner, Maxar, collected new satellite imagery of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Enerhodar, Ukraine. As a group of inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) prepare to visit the facility, the satellite imagery provides a detailed look at the plant and the surrounding area and reveals recent damage to the roof of a building adjacent to several of the nuclear reactors, a group of armored personnel carriers positioned along a road near the reactors, as well as a couple of brush fires seen outside of the main power plant facilities.
