Planet, an Earth observation data and insights company, has announced its acquisition of Sinergise, a Slovenian cloud-based geospatial data platform provider. The acquisition aims to expand Planet’s data analysis platform, aiding the company to provide a more comprehensive set of geospatial data services to its customers. Planet aims to continue expanding into new vertical markets with products and applications where EO data is highly relevant such as agriculture, civil government, insurance, financial markets, and sustainable supply chain management.
Easy access to geospatial data
The acquisition of Sinergise aligns with Planet’s strategic focus on offering innovative and actionable data products. Sinergise platform provides customers with easy access to large volumes of geospatial data, making it a valuable addition to Planet’s current offerings.
Sinergise’s technology powers the European Union-backed Sentinel Hub, an advanced API-driven, cloud streaming platform that allows customers to access multi-source EO data for processing, analysis, and insight extraction. Planet and Sinergise have been partners since 2016 and this acquisition reinforces that making EO data more accessible and actionable to decision makers is critical to businesses and governments.
Sinergise has a strong reputation for its user-friendly platform that supports the processing and analysis of large volumes of satellite data. The company’s platform is used by a diverse range of customers, including government agencies, environmental organizations, and private sector companies.
The acquisition will enable Planet to integrate Sinergise’s platform with its own satellite imagery data and analytics capabilities, offering customers a seamless experience that delivers value and insights in near real-time. The move will also allow Planet to expand its reach into new markets, such as agriculture and forestry, where there is a growing demand for geospatial data analysis services.
Planet’s CEO, Will Marshall, commented on the acquisition, stating, “With the acquisition of Sinergise, we are strengthening our position as a leader in geospatial data analysis. The combination of Planet’s satellite imagery and analytics capabilities with Sinergise’s platform will enable us to deliver a powerful suite of products that will provide our customers with the insights they need to make informed decisions.”
Planet Acquisitions
The acquisition of Sinergise is the latest in a series of strategic moves made by Planet lately. The company has been investing heavily in its satellite constellation, launching dozens of new satellites into orbit to increase the frequency and coverage of its data. Planet has also been expanding its partnerships with other companies in the geospatial data industry, such as Maxar Technologies and Google Earth Engine.
Planet made its foray into Europe with acquisition of Berlin based BlackBridge and its RapidEye Earth-observation constellation. Planet expanded its European reach with purchase of VanderSat, a Dutch company that gathers data on soil moisture and land surface temperature in 2021. This is Planet’s sixth acquisition.
