The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched a record 20 satellites from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh’s Sriharikota. The launch of PSLV C-34/Cartosat-2 Series Satellite Mission took place at 9:26 am on Wednesday. PSLV-C34 is being used to carry the satellites, including India’s earth observation spacecraft Cartosat-2, from the second launch pad of the space centre.
11 Facts about ISRO PSLV Missions
- ISRO has so far launched 57 satellites of foreign countries on eighteen different PSLV missions.
2. Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) has “done its job,” said ISRO Chairman AS Kiran Kumar.
3. 20 satellites were launched with just one rocket.
4. The 320-tonne PSLV C-34 carried 17 foreign small satellites from Canada, Indonesia, Germany and the US but the main passenger was a 727-kg Indian earth observation satellite called Cartosat-2, which can take high-resolution images.
5. The launch also placed into orbit two Indian academic community-built satellites, Sathyabhamasat and Swayam.
6. It also includes Twelve Dove satellites of Planet Labs, collectively known as “Flock 2p”. This is the first time that small sat player Planet Lab is launching their satellites using PSLV
7. The launch of the 20 satellites, weighing about 1,288 kg, cost about half of what is incurred by other space agencies.
8. India‘s Cartosat-2 Series is similar to the earlier Cartosat-2, 2A and 2B. The images sent by Cartosat satellite will be useful for cartographic, urban, rural, coastal land use, water distribution and other applications.
10. This is the first time ISRO has launched more than 10 satellites with a single rocket. In 2008, it had launched 10 satellites.
11. Russia holds the world record for placing the most number of satellites in a single launch. Its Dnepr rocket launched 37 satellites in 2014.
