But, would you have thought that the technology can be used to nab African ivory smugglers?ย  An investigative journalist with National Geographic did just that. Bryan Christy got a taxi-dermist to design artificial, but extremely realistic-looking elephant tusks. He then had them embedded with custom-made GPS tracking chips. The journalist was able to track the tusks as they were moved through dangerous smuggling networks, from Congo to Sudan and got the smugglers arrested
