World’s first pure java-TM-off-board navigation application for OSGi Terminals

Webraska, the provider of LBS (Location-Based Services), Telematics applications and enabling TCP/IP server-based platforms, has delivered the first Pure Java TM version of its off-board turn-by-turn navigation application to ACUNIA, a pioneer in the emerging automotive telematics industry.

Recently ported on to ACUNIA’s CarCube, it has recently been delivered to several automotive players for pilot trials and validation campaigns.

The Pure Java TM navigation application is based on IbDN(R) (Internet-based Distributed Navigation), Webraska’s award-winning, patented technology for distributed navigation. This specific implementation is the first such anywhere in the world using OSGi specifications. OSGi is a fully open interface defined by a standardization group ( www.OSGi.org) for the delivery of managed broadband services to networks in homes, cars and other environments.

The Webraska IbDN(R) SDK for Java allows tier-one suppliers and OEMs to integrate IbDN(R) and implement wireless off-board navigation applications in Java-based mobile or embedded terminals. Java platforms combined with an OSGi environment provide users and Telematics service providers with flexibility for all aspects of service management. As an example, the application software embedded in the terminal can be remotely installed and up-graded. Furthermore, using OSGi based functionality, users can subscribe,unsubscribe and upgrade software from the terminal directly without connecting to a Call Centre or requiring CD-ROM based installation. This is possible thanks to the remote downloading of Java OSGi bundles.

ACUNIA and Webraska are both taking part in a General Motors Europe Field Trial to identify and assess selected Telematics Services and to evaluate the ACUNIA Open Telematics Framework(R) (OTF), a java-based architecture for the delivery and management of electronic services, as a new delivery technology. The Field Trial is also using ACUNIA’s CarCube as the reference design for next generation terminals. The terminal runs an OSGi framework for local lifecycle management of services.

Webraska is also implementing its IbDN(R) SDK for Java within a cooperative project called 3GT (Third Generation Telematics) funded by the European Commission as part of the IST Programme. This project is coordinated by ERTICO and involves ACUNIA, BMW, Robert Bosch, Fiat Center Research, Ericsson, Gatespace, Mizar Mediaservice, Opel, Peugeot, TNO, Vodafone Passo, Volvo and Wireless Car.
