Visual Link Internet and Xybernaut Corporation announced that the International Association of Police Chiefs (IACP) has awarded the partner companies’ solution with the 2004 IACP Leadership in Technology award. The specific category for the award is Excellence in Communication. The award was granted in recognition of the partners’ application of wireless broadband and mobile/wearable computing for emergency response in Winchester, VA.
IACP is the world’s oldest and largest nonprofit membership organization of police executives, with over 19,000 members in over 89 different countries. IACP’s leadership consists of the operating chief executives of international, federal, state and local agencies of all sizes.
The IACP Leadership in Technology Award Program recognizes a law enforcement agency’s superior achievement and innovation in the field of communication and information technology. The program is an international competition that is open to local, tribal, state, provincial, federal, and multi-jurisdictional law enforcement agencies. Several award categories highlight the achievement of an agency in implementing an innovative information technology that enhances the effectiveness of law enforcement. The Excellence in Communications category recognizes an agency’s implementation of wireless based technology to improve mission critical voice communications, interoperability and/or information/data sharing.
Visual Link president and founder Mark Bayliss will accept the award at the IACP Law Enforcement Information Management Conference (LEIM) in Sacramento, CA. The conference will be held May 3-7. In addition to the LEIM conference, an overview of the Visual Link-Xybernaut solution will be presented at the 2004 IACP Annual Conference in Los Angeles, CA.
The winning mobile/wearable computing solution incorporates Visual Link with Xybernaut Mobile Assistant (MA V) and Atigo product families to meet various unique computing and knowledge management needs of law enforcement teams. The Visual Link-Xybernaut service was designed to provide a wireless broadband network that supports state/local governments as well as business communities in cities and municipal regions.
Visual Link and Xybernaut have already begun to deploy the service in municipalities in the mid-Atlantic, Midwestern and Southeastern United States. Initially, the municipal networks are supporting local emergency management teams — law enforcement, first responder/emergency and fire & rescue — then local businesses in each local community will also be given the opportunity to utilize the network.
The joint solution provides on-scene capabilities such as support for digital cameras, GPS/navigation, audio/video, e-mail/messaging, database access and remote data gathering, report generation, connectivity to law enforcement knowledge centers and other features. A key feature of the solution is its support for commercial off the shelf (COTS) applications, peripherals and software.
