Using GIS to look for new locations

Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) will use Geographical Information System data to help locate two new sites for education centres.

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission supplied CCAC with the GIS data that features 200 layers of demographic information, including population statistics, locations of major employers, industrial parks, transit routes and park-`-ride lots.

CCAC runs four campuses and nine community education centers; only the Homewood-Brushton center is owned by CCAC. CCAC officials are currently involved in lease negotiations, according to Kevin Smay, director of planning and research at CCAC.

In addition to the two new sites its scouting, a few additional locations will be sought in the near future, Mr. Smay said. According to Mr. Smay, there is an “inequitable geographic distribution” of community colleges in southwestern Pennsylvania compared to other states. He said the data provided by SPC will help pinpoint where CCAC education centres should be located.
