UN uses satellite to map displaced in South Sudan

Courtesy: Southsudan infoUS: The Program Operational Satellite Applications of the United Nations (UNOSAT ) is analyzing satellite images to produce information about the situation of thousands of internally displaced people by the violence in South Sudan. "We look for signs of PID and destruction of civilian infrastructure in urban areas affected by armed violence," said Lars Bromley, UNOSAT, which monitors the presence and movement of IDPs in the UN neighborhood facilities.

"We are also providing information and pictures to our colleagues in the UN secretariat, working to support UNMISS [United Nations Mission in South Sudan] in the field, "said the director of UNOSAT, Einar Bjorgo, on the request of the Section of Mapping the UN Department of Field Support.
