Thales Navigation Helps Kentucky Law Enforcement Officers Make Streets Safer With Magellan Handheld GPS Devices

< 1 Minute Read

Thales (tal-less) Navigation, a leading global provider of GPS solutions including the Magellan® and Ashtech® product lines, announced that the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has purchased more than 6,000 Magellan GPS handheld devices for state and local law enforcement officers who investigate vehicle collisions. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, a state agency maintaining more than 27,000 miles of state roads, has distributed the Magellan GPS units to law enforcement officers to ensure the accuracy of crash site locations data in order to enhance overall safety.

Accurate crash location data is essential to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in planning and implementing roadway improvements to enhance safety and service on the state maintained road system. For this application, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet required a rugged, weather-resistant GPS unit; automatic positional averaging capability for a more accurate position fix; and easy incorporation of the GPS coordinates into the state’s CRASH reports and database. GPS products that met these criteria were evaluated on price, technical support, and quick delivery of more than 6,000 units. Thales Navigation with its Magellan line of consumer GPS solutions rated best in all of these areas.

The Magellan GPS 315 is an affordable pocket-sized unit enabling navigation of over 15,000 cities worldwide and up to 500 user-entered locations. It offers a powerful 12 parallel-channel receiver for superior tracking; nine easy-to-follow graphic navigation screens; PC upload/download capability; and a durable, weatherproof design, with up to 15 hours of battery life on two AA batteries and an internal 10-year lithium battery backup.
