India will soon have cities with their dedicated Digital Twins, all thanks to the strategic partnership signed between Survey of India ( SOI), the countryโs National Mapping Agency, and Genesys International Corporation Limited, a leading mapping and geospatial companies.
โGIS-enabled digital twin of Indian towns and cities will help government authorities and city planners to design sustainable and resilient urban spheres. The highly accurate geometrical data will help in developing a host of high-end applications. This mapping program will enable flagship government schemes such as such as SVAMITVA, Smart Cities Mission, PM GatiShakti etcโ, says Sajid Malik, CMD, Genesys International.
โWe are creating the New India Map stack, high precision data, which is going to be used in many applications. The collaboration will work on developing GIS-enabled 3D digital twin model of Indian cities and towns, which will encompass accurate 3D data for Indian cities, and will lead to the first-time creation of highly accurate geometrical data. This will open up avenues for creating several high-end applications that could solve multiple problems facing urban Indiaโ, he adds.
The GIS-enabled digital twin will further support the smart cities agenda across segments including Urban Development, Planning, Governance, Disaster Management, Utilities, AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction).
The alliance between SOI and Genesys will support mission-critical projects and provide the stakeholders the required technological capabilities to solve critical challenges.
Key Highlights of the Collaboration:
- Genesys will generate Geospatial 3D Digital Twins for major Indian cities and towns.
- SOI will provide CORS datasets to Genesys.
- SOI will offer administrative boundaries of major Indian cities and towns.
- Genesys and SOI will collaborate on the urban 3D Data Model.
- Genesys will acquire accurate geospatial datasets using advanced surveying equipment and ground validations.
- Genesys will license its geospatial data products to end-users in a “Content-as-a-Service” model.
- Joint efforts will be made to apprise city administrations of the utility of accurate geospatial datasets through technical workshops.
- The collaboration was marked by an event attended by senior government officials and industry leaders, showcasing Genesys International’s cutting-edge geospatial solutions that actively address complex urban challenges.
PPP for Greater Good
The ultimate aim of government is to make use of technology, frame policies, and develop applications for the benefit of its citizens and other ministries of the government. Collaboration between the government and private players on a PPP basis can be very useful to solve a lot of urban challenges in the country.
โIn order to speed up the process and adoption of latest technology and its uses, private partnership is important. With the new geospatial policy, we have been able to do it. Government has advanced from traditional methods of procuring data to collecting accurate geospatial information, develop applications that can solve problems in real-time. All of this has happened due to private-public partnershipsโ, says Hitesh Kumar Makwana, Surveyor General of India.
Digital Twin for Future Cities
โThe new wave of urbanization is expected to bring both opportunities and challenges. Urbanization is important for the economic growth of cities. Like the honorable Prime Minister keeps reminding us that โCities are the engines of economic growthโ, says Debolina Kundu, Director, National Institute of Urban Affairs.
According to NITI Aayog, cities in India contribute to 60% of GDP in India, and 90% of the tax revenues. Majority of the jobs are also created in urban areas.
Due to inadequate planning, management and investments, in the present scenario, 3/4th of urban centers in the country do not have proper future plans, and consequently face manifold risks. This is where Digital Twin would be indispensable to make cities sustainable, resilient, and citizen friendly.
