Satellite images had an important contribution in a study on the emission of carbon dioxide (CO ²) involving the Amazon. The study, presented in an article of Fernando Espírito-Santo, from NASA, under the title “Size and frequency of natural forest disturbances and the Amazon forest carbon balance”, was published last March in the scientific journal Nature Communications.
According to the study, which had the participation of Yosio Shimabukuro and Valdete Duarte, researchers of the Remote Sensing Division, in the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), from São José dos Campos (SP), the Amazon absorbs more carbon dioxide than it releases.
The work, which also had used other technologies, shows the key role of forests in combating global warming. The study measured the amount of CO² released into the atmosphere by the decomposition of trees in the Amazon. Read the article at: https://www.inpe.br/noticias/arquivos/pdf/03042014.pdf.
