Satellite-assisted snow removal

US city, Omaha will be looking to the heavens to help scrape the snow off the streets this winter.

The idea is to deck out city snowplows with GPS systems to help coordinate the snow removal efforts.

Many late model vehicles are equipped with this technology. The gear can help with tasks ranging from pinpointing the location of your vehicle to unlocking the doors.

The city plans to experiment with the units on plows and sand trucks in order to track the vehicles and help the city figure out which streets have been cleared and which ones need attention.

The city plans to put the global positioning systems in seven or eight vehicles. That will cost approximately $13,000 to $14,000. Officials will monitor performance and if the system is effective the units will be added to more vehicles.
