India: India’s principal mapping agency, Survey of India has asked Union Ministry of Skill and Development to recognize geospatial as a sector or a sub-sector, according to a report in The Times of India.

Addressing an ASSOCHAN conference on emerging trends in geospatial technologies, Lt Gen Girish Kumar, Surveyor General of India said, “As on today, geospatial is not recognized as a sector, like power, mining and telecom, whereas, geospatial is the mother of all these  because without geospatial information not even a single sector can come up but this has been ignored, whatever maybe the reasons.”

Kumar added, “Now we have taken up the case with the Ministry of Skill Development and we are trying to push forward so that geospatial is recognized as a sector. We are trying to make a case whereby geospatial is recognized either as a sector or a sub-sector.”
