Norway’s Ministry of Climate and Environment recently awarded an international contract to Kongsberg Satellite Services (KAT), who, alongside Planet and Airbus will provide universal access to high-resolution satellite monitoring of the tropics. This aims to provide fuel the efforts to prevent deforestation and save the world’s tropical forests.
The coalition of three huge geospatial organizations will bring new technologies and transparency to support the mission of Norway’s International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI).
Planet quoted Sveinung Rotevatn, Norway’s Minister of Climate and Environment as saying that this may revolutionize global forest monitoring. Better insight into what’s happening within the rainforests will enhance efforts to guard these priceless ecosystems.
This unique and distinct partnership between the general public and personal sectors is an outcome of a comprehensive public procurement process led by Norway, with the ambition to utilize technology and data to assist and facilitate solutions towards the worldwide challenge of tropical deforestation.
Will Marshall, CEO and co-founder of Planet said that revolutionizing satellite data so that they could see deforestation happening fast enough to prevent it had been one among the key reasons they founded Planet nine years ago. He added that they’re honored to partner with Norway, KSAT and Airbus on this global crisis. Norway has taken a scientific approach to measuring natural capital within the key area of tropical forests, leading the way to enable the transition to a sustainable economy.
