US: To reflect upon the use of drones in agriculture, Pix4Dโ€™s agricultural business manager Jorge Fernandez delivered a speech on using drone mapping solutions for precision agriculture before the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) on Tuesday.

The meeting held to discuss the role of science, technology, and innovation in ensuring food security by 2030, in which Fernandez presented the role of drone mapping solutions for precision agriculture, and their potential impact on food security.

โ€œThe purpose of these meetings is to explore how to make agriculture more climate resilient and productive,โ€ said Fernandez. โ€œHow can we innovate and contribute to more efficient markets? I believe Pix4Dโ€™s agriculture solution is part of that innovation and has great potential.โ€

Pix4Dag, a software solution that provides detailed crop information from drone imagery, converts multispectral images into accurate reflectance and index maps, and standard images into high-resolution orthomosaic maps.

These specialised outputs are then easily integrated into agriculture operations by the grower, enabling them to better evaluate crop health, produce tailored fertiliser application maps, and glean other information.

โ€œWhatโ€™s particularly interesting about this drone mapping solution is that it has the potential to democratise precision agriculture,โ€ said Fernandez. โ€œGrowers donโ€™t have to have to have a specific platform, camera, or drone, and donโ€™t need to be scientific experts.โ€

Findings and recommendations of the panel will be considered at the 20th annual session of the commission in May 2017 and may form the basis of resolutions submitted for consideration by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
