The National Space Research & Development Agency (NASRDA) has announced a collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR/CAS) to enhance Nigeriaโs satellite development efforts according to Space in Africa.
As NASRDAโs Director General, Dr Matthew Adepoju highlighted, this partnership is symbolic and a significant step that aligns with the nationโs space development roadmap, promising mutual benefits and a brighter future for both countries in space research.
Nigeria has maintained a strategic partnership with China in space exploration. This ongoing collaboration is crucial for Nigeria to rapidly develop its space capabilities without reinventing the wheel. Nigeria can expedite its development by leveraging Chinaโs advances, particularly in space manufacturing capabilities and data analysis.
Dr Adepoju outlined that the collaboration will focus on three main thematic areas:
- Access to Satellite Data:ย A key collaboration aspect is ensuring Nigeria has continuous access to crucial satellite data for various developmental processes. This is exemplified by earlier projects likeย CropWatch, where space-based data has been utilised in a bottom-up approachโfrom local government to the federal government levelโto monitor agricultural progress. By providing valuable insights into agricultural conditions, this data aids in decision-making and policy formulation. NASRDA aims to leverage this collaboration to encourage further partnerships focusing on additional aspects of national development.
- Constructing a Secure Ground Station:ย Establishing a secure Ground Station within Nigeria is anticipated to revolutionise the countryโs space research capabilities. A Ground Station situated locally will enable better management and utilisation of satellite data, enhancing the ability to conduct space research and development more efficiently and effectively.
- Exchange of Technical Expertise and Equipment:ย The collaboration will facilitate the exchange of technical expertise and equipment. By learning from experts, Nigeriaโs progress in space technology will be accelerated. This knowledge transfer is vital for building local capacity and expertise, ensuring sustainable development in the space sector.
Dr Adepoju expressed confidence that this partnership will substantially develop Nigeriaโs space sector. He emphasised that the collaboration is designed to support the nationโs broader developmental goals by enhancing space technology across various sectors, thereby contributing to overall national growth and development.
