To make agriculture-statistics more reliable, Indian government has formulated a scheme for expanding the use of Remote Sensing Technology in the farm sector. “In the field of agricultural statistics, we have been using RST for generation of advance estimates of cropped area. However, use of this technology is limited to a few crops. We have formulated a scheme aimed at expanding its coverage in terms of crops and states”, Minister of State for Agriculture Kanti Lal Bhuria said recently.

Information on size of holdings is very beneficial for the purpose of preparation of various schemes and increasing agricultural production, he said. Agriculture Secretary Radha Singh has said Indian agriculture was overwhelmingly dependent on the monsoons and statistics provided the backbone of the country’s buffer-stocking policies and food and nutrition security systems.
