In 2018, Theย Europeanย Commission (EU) proposed to allocate ย โฌ16 billionย to enhance EU’s leadership in space.ย However, things didn’t turn out so hopeful for the space sector with the new budget announcement by EU. There was a cut in the overall budget for science and technology, including space.ย
The budget for theย Europeanย Space Programme has now been set at โฌ13.2 billion, of which โฌ8 billion will be invested in the satellite navigation system Galileoย and โฌ.4.81 billion for Copernicus, Europeโs earth observation programme. In the earlier budget,ย โฌ9.7 billion was allocated forย Galileo and โฌ5.8 billion forย Copernicus.ย
The remaining 392 million euros is going toย be split between Europeanย space situational awareness (SSA) investments and GovSatCom, an initiative aimed at providing secure satellite communications for EC members.
Horizon Europe, the EUโs next research and innovation programย will receive a budget of โฌ80.9 billion. The figure is quite less as compared to the proposed โฌ94.4 billion put forward by the European Commission in May. The budget forย R&Dย have also got significantly cut.
