US: Day 2 of the fifth session of UN-GGIM witnessed the third meeting of the committee of experts. Agenda item 8 brought together senior leaders from both professional communities to discuss the strategic vision and goals for the Integration of Statistical and Geospatial Information. Participants discussed the importance of a ‘Global Statistical Spatial Framework’ and how the initiative has been a work in progress since 2013.
Member states’ representatives stressed on the need of working closely with those who are progressing in institutional and information policy issues. Modernisation of institutions, modern approaches to surveys and censuses and usage of more data (big data) is the need of the hour. It was also discussed in the meeting that strengthening the mandate of UN CoE GGIM would enable the elevation of technical, institutional and information policy issues.
The meeting stressed on the importance of: understanding emerging information agendas like the Agenda on the 2020 Round of Population Censuses, a global map for sustainable development; acknowledging the importance of the Integration of Statistical and Geospatial Information so that the international collaboration efforts at the operational and technical level can proceed with authority; and acknowledging the need for a mechanism, such as a global statistical geospatial framework, to facilitate consistent production and integration approaches for geo-statistical information.
