Indian Department of Atomic Science, Space and Defence Research receive a Lion

A sum of Rs.14,191 crore has been allocated for science in the Budget, an increase of 16.14 percent over the last year.

The Department of Atomic Energy’s allocation jumped up by 30.63 per cent, from Rs. 1,524.1 crore last year to 1,991 crore for 2002-3. The Department of Space got an increase of 18.56 percent, amounting to Rs. 2,263.89 crore last year being Rs. 1,909.4 crore.

The Department of Biotechnology has been allocated Rs. 235.6 crore-an increase of Rs. 27 percent. The budget of DRDO (Defence research and Development Organisation) has been enhanced by 10.26 percent from Rs. 2,455 crore to Rs. 2,706.9 crore.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) also got a shot in the arm through a 28.01 percent increase in its budget.
