India: Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras are developing a data assimilation technique for cyclone prediction. This method combines numerical weather models with satellite and/or radar data to reduce errors in prediction of tropical cyclones. Currently, meteorologists at India Meteorological Department make forecasts using weather observations taken on the ground or from ships and in the upper atmosphere. This gives a synoptic view of the world's weather. However, the new technique will improve prediction by up to 35% for a 24-hour forecast and up to 12% for a 54-hour forecast.
