IMD to use geospatial data to issue cyclone warnings

< 1 Minute Read

India Meteorological Department (IMD) intends to use meteorological data along with with geospatial and population data for assessing the impact of the cyclone in a particular area and provide location of district-specific tailored warnings for the tropical cyclones.

The Hindustan Times quoted Dr. Mrityunjay Mohapatra, IMDโ€™s director general, as saying that the damage caused to infrastructure due to cyclones is increasing world over. With Indiaโ€™s growing economy, they aim to reduce the damage and economic losses to property and infrastructure. He added that the dynamic, impact-based cyclone warning will be commissioned this season.

Meanwhile, National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) will collaborate with IMD and governments of coastal states to develop a Web-based Dynamic Composite Risk Atlas (Web-DCRA) for the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project.
