US: The International Cartographers Assocition (ICA) Commission on Open Source Geospatial Technologies has established three new open source geospatial labs in the US and Switzerland.
The first of the three labs has been established at the Center for Applied GIScience (CAGIS), University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) in the US. CAGIS is an interdisciplinary research centre that focuses on using advanced space-time theories, methods, and technologies in Geographic Information Science for complex geographical problem-solving. The lab will be led by Dr. Wenwu Tang (Executive director of CAGIS) and Dr. Xingjian Liu. ICA has also established another lab in Kent State University, Ohio. The laboratory will support computational social science research and educational excellence through the development, implementation, and application of open source geo-computation and geo-visualisation. Professor Xinyue Ye, GIS Faculty at Kent State University and founding director of computational social science research lab will lead the initiative. The lab will be fully operational before the end of September. In Switzerland, ICA has established a lab at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI). It will be led by Professor Massimiliano Cannata.
