The Space-Based Positioning Navigation and Timing Programme (SBPP) will explore new and unique ways that can be utilized to deliver vital satellite navigation services to the UK. These services are essential for the functioning of transport systems, energy networks, mobile communications and national security and Defence, whilst boosting British space industry along with developing UK’s own capabilities in these services.
UK GNSS is a search program which has developed outline plans for a standard satellite system as an alternative to American GPS or the EU’s Galileo. The program will now be reset because based on this framework, the SBPP will create newer, more innovative ideas of delivering global ‘sat nav’ and secure satellite services to satisfy and fulfill public, government and industry needs.
Capitalizing on the ingenuity of British businesses and academics, the program will explore the applications and employability of various sorts of satellites at various levels of orbit by exploiting technologies offered by companies at the cutting-edge of innovation like OneWeb, Inmarsat and Airbus.
The government envisions the United Kingdom to become a globally competitive space power and is taking action through the newly established National Space Council, emerging National Space Strategy and therefore the Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development and policy, to provide the conditions, resources and environment for a robust, secure and innovative space sector that delivers for British people.
A study from London Economics, backed by the government of United Kingdom, forecasts that sustained disruption to existing satellite navigation capabilities is likely to cost the United Kingdom economy £1 billion per day. Early Investment in space technology and services will enable the United Kingdom to grow and build back better, while unleashing the country’s global competitiveness and underpinning growth and high-skilled jobs at the same time.
