Image of Portugal Portugal: GMV has formalised an agreement with the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forestry (ICNF) to produce maps of burnt areas in Portugal. The project will cover the whole of mainland Portugal, through the production of specific maps for the years 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. The project will use satellite images of Landsat 5 and Landsat 7 Landsat 8, through which the affected areas will be indentified for each year. The process is based on the identification of the specific spectral response that the areas have different wavelengths recorded by Landsat.

"The information generated in this project will allow a deeper understanding of the impact of fires in recent years, being a relevant tool for the preparation of risk maps, preparation of strategies for firefighting or support environmental planning," says spokesperson from GMV. The project will be carried out by applications and remote sensing services team in Portugal, which is also working with the agency of the Abu Dhabi environment for the production of habitat maps for the entire emirate.
