Metsรคliitto has adopted a new forwarders’ work management and reporting system, applying spatial information and real time positioning. The system was implemented by GISnet Solutions Finland and Sonera. The new system integrates over 400 forwarders operating in the forest into Metsรคliitto’s SAP R/3 -based supply chain management. With the system, work tasks and related spatial information are sent via Sonera’s wireless GPRS data network to Metsรคliitto’s subcontractors and to computers in forwarders. More than 400 subcontractors and forwarders connected to the system report about work progress via wireless Internet in real time. Information received from the system is utilized in planning and implementing the daily timber transportation in Finland. More effective transport, improved inventory. Telecommunication and data security are based on Sonera Fleetware messaging service that links mobile personnel and vehicles to company databases. The service enables companies to cope with the special requirements of mobile data transmission, such as checking the integrity of message content, handling mobile phone network protocols, intermediate storage, as well as managing users and applications.
