A GIS aided road map will be introduced in Kerala in India for upgrading road network to international standards. The ”Road Information Management system” (RIMS), expected to be completed in January next year, would help in upgrading and building new roads in a time bound manner. Once the mapping is complete the Public Works Department in each district will be equipped with all the information regarding roads by July 2006. The system would be of immense help in studying the geography and the necessity of new roads in a region besides aiding bridge and culvert repair work in a systematic manner. Remote sensing and satellite pictures would be used for creating road maps, which would be helpful in the future to trace the geographical aspects of a region. The RIMS could also be useful for projects like road maintenance management, financial management, e-governance and accident recording systems.
