The state town planning department will soon have facilities of using remote sensing and GIS based information to prepare digitalized maps of urban areas of Manipur in India. Greater Imphal area will be first to be mapped using the proposed use of remote sensing and GIS based information. The project will also be of great importance to the town- planning department, which is also a veritable source of maps. It will also greatly help in achieving the 10th plan objective of integrating the Municipal plan with the district plan and subsequently the state and national plan.
The digitization of maps using GIS will be of immense help in storing various and socioeconomic parameters and utilities like laying water supply pipeline, electric and telephone cables etc., from an area in an electronic format for easy retrieval and application in urban and regional planning. It will take about three years to complete the mapping for greater Imphal.
