India: The state government of Uttar Pradesh is planning integrated planning of all cities based on mapping and geographic information system (GIS). Secretary, Urban Development Ministry, Government of India, Sudhir Krishna, on his visit to Lucknow told media that the state government wants all 630 cities of UP to be covered under the massive urban development plan which includes development of housing, road connectivity, modern infrastructures and services like water supply, sewerage, drainage, etc.
The announcement comes only few days after the Minister of Urban Development voiced the idea of creating 100 smart cities in India. The idea behind putting all of this information on map is to help in future planning. It is believed that in the JNNURM scheme, there was a lack of information on map about location of various kinds of infrastructures existing in the city. Hence, all developments need to be incorporated in the map through GIS to help in future.
