Geospatial World adds two more leaders to its Hall of Fame list

3 Minutes Read

Geospatial World has added two more eminent geospatial pioneers to its Hall of Fame list.

The Hall of Fame was initiated in 2017 on the occasion of the organization’s 20th anniversary. The Geospatial World Hall of Fame recognizes the extraordinary individuals who have made significant and transformative contributions to the geospatial ecosystem.

This year, on its 25th Anniversary, two more global leaders โ€“ Prof. Sir Martin Sweeting, Founder of Surrey, Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL), and Dr. BVR Mohan Reddy, Founder, Cyient โ€“ were included in the list.

Geospatial World Forum 2022 hosted and celebrated these Geospatial Hall of Fame awardees at Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on 10 May 2022.

Professor Sir Martin Sweeting

Recognized internationally as the “father of small satellites,” Professor Sir Martin Sweeting has fundamentally changed the global economics of Space. Starting in 1979 with research at the University of Surrey, Sir Martin pioneered the highly capable modern small satellites utilizing consumer electronics to change the economics of space that laid the foundations of the present commercial โ€˜newspaceโ€™ industry worldwide.

In 1985, he founded a university spin-off company (SSTL) that has designed, built, launched, and operated in orbit 65 nano, micro, and mini-satellite missions and 34 GNSS payloads for the European Galileo constellation.

As Chairman of the Surrey Space Centre and a distinguished professor at the University of Surrey, Sir Martin leads a team of academic faculty and doctoral researchers investigating advanced small satellite concepts and techniques, with a particular interest in space robotics for in-orbit debris removal and the assembly of large space telescopes. He has supervised over 200 graduated Ph.D. students and has over 350 publications. The relationship between the Surrey Space Centre and SSTL is an example of real academic-commercial synergy. Sir Martin is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the IET, and the Institute of Physics. Knighted by HM The Queen, he has been identified as one of the 20 most influential engineers in the UK.

Dr. BVR Mohan Reddy

Dr. BVR Mohan Reddy has dedicated his life to mapping and its integration with the business intelligence, engineering, utilities, and infrastructure industry for over 30 years. He founded Cyient (earlier, Infotech Enterprises) in 1991 to provide engineering services to global markets. He established the โ€˜Engineered in Indiaโ€™ brand and led Cyient to contribute more than USD 5 billion in cumulative exports to several international customers, including many Fortune 100 companies.

As Founder Chairman, Dr. Reddy contributes to the organizationโ€™s global brand and purpose. Dr. Reddy acts as a sounding board, mentor, and critic in the spirit of enabling sustainable growth, especially in matters related to strategy, values, policy, CSR, and government relations. He promotes the highest standards of integrity and corporate governance, particularly at the board level.

Dr. Reddy served as Chairman of NASSCOM from 2015-16 and has been a member of its Executive Council since 2003, and continues to shape the industry agenda. He served as the Chairman of CII, Southern Region, in 2008-2009 and currently serves as the National Education Council Chairman. Dr. Reddy is also the Founding Director of T-Hub, the largest start-up incubation center in India. He holds postgraduate degrees in engineering from IIT Kanpur and the University of Michigan, USA. He is the recipient of honorary doctorates from JNTU Hyderabad, JNTU Kakinada, Andhra University, and KL University.
