Garmin buys GPS products firm DeLorme

Switzerland: GPS giant Garmin has signed a deal to acquire DeLorme, a company that designs and markets consumer-based satellite tracking devices with two-way communication and navigational capabilities. DeLorme’s inReach series of GPS devices allow users to send and receive satellite text messages or trigger an SOS for emergency help, anywhere in the world. Additionally, DeLorme also boasts of an extensive library of digital cartography and enterprise GIS software, as well as traditional mapping. Garmin plans to retain most of the 92 employees who work at DeLorme. Financial terms of the purchase agreement and acquisition were not released.
