First announcement: BRICS Forum on Big Data for Sustainable Development

2 Minutes Read

BRICS Sustainable Development

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was
adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. The BRICS countries share a strong desire and commitment towards
closer cooperation to ensure collective sustainable development over the years. Science, technology and innovation (STI)
are vital driving forces to tackle global challenges and achieve the SDGs. As the new paradigm of scientific discovery,
big data provides increasing opportunities to stimulate the advancement of STI and support to achieve the sustainable
development goals. The BRICS framework provides an effective platform to enhance mutual trust, develop communication and collaboration. Many productive joint programs in STI, as one of the priorities, have been carried out under this framework.

Within this context, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academy of Science of South Africa, Brazilian Academy of Sciences,
Russian Academy of Sciences, and Indian National Science Academy will co-host the BRICS Forum on Big Data for
Sustainable Development, aiming to share innovative achievements and useful experiences and gather international consensus on big data to support sustainable development. The forum will provide an opportunity for scientists, engineers, policy-makers and other stakeholders in BRICS countries as well as representatives of relevant international organizations to explore how to address common challenges to sustainable development through STI cooperation, especially based on big data.
