With Delhi Transport Corporation’s (DTC) automatic vehicle tracking and monitoring system becoming operational, commuters will now be able determine at what time their bus will arrive. Besides, DTC would also be able to monitor movement of the buses.
According to Transport Minister Ajay Maken, the system will function in around 200 DTC buses from June. Initially, the system will be operational in five buses for a month to monitor its functioning.
“Later, it can be installed at the bus stops to inform the commuters which bus is approaching and the time in which the bus for their destination will arrive. We are thinking of even bringing private bus operators under the system. This will help to keep a check on them,” he stated.
The system, which runs on global positioning technology, a data box in installed in each bus for the driver to view. “Emergency messages like diverting the route because of an exigency can be given from the control room,” said S S Ghosh, Managing Director of CMC Limited, the agency implementing the project.
The driver will also be able to communicate with the help of the data box. In case of a fire, he will have to press the fire signal in the box and the alert message will be flashed on the digital map of Delhi in the control room.
“We will be able to know the exact location of the emergency and the recovery van could be send immediately,” Ghosh said.
There are 16 such sign buttons on the box including the ones for immediately informing the police and the fire control room.
Maken said the system would keep a check on errant DTC drivers.
