U.S. federal marshals were bringing a fugitive con man back to Texas this weekend from Dillon, Mont., where they ended his flight toward the Canadian border. Finding 64-year-old Bobbie McCoy Burress was easy : they just had the rental company switch on the global positioning device in his rented car.
“They turned on the device and located the guy in Montana,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Arnold Spencer. “If he had made it to Canada, it would have made it much more difficult.”
Mr. Burress was supposed to report to federal prison in Fort Worth, Texas, on Dec. 15, but failed to appear. He was about 350 miles from the Canadian border when law enforcement officials located him the next day. Mr. Burress was sentenced last October to seven years in prison after being convicted of fraud in a scheme that lured investors with promises of stakes in $1.6-billion (U.S.) in unmined California gold. He was indicted last week on a felony charge of failure to appear.
In February, a federal jury convicted Mr. Burress of securities fraud, conspiracy to commit securities fraud, and mail fraud. Mr. Cayce pleaded guilty and testified against his partner. He is serving a one-year prison sentence.
