Hong Kong: The “City under the Blue Sky – A Collection of Hong Kong Aerial Photos”, produced by the Survey and Mapping Office (SMO), Lands Department, is on sale now.
Since 1968, SMO has been taking aerial photos of Hong Kong at regular intervals. Over 10,000 photos are taken each year which are not only used for the production of topographic maps, but also serve as documentary records for works progress and land administration, etc. These photos are also useful in making evaluation, projection and planning for town planning and ecological conservation purposes. Indeed, aerial photos provide a valuable historical archive bearing testimony to the development of Hong Kong.
With 2011 the centenary of powered flight in Hong Kong, SMO considered it a good occasion to publish this collection of aerial photos. The selected oblique aerial photos taken recently in this collection will provide not only a rare perspective on the latest land features, but also useful information about current developments of Hong Kong. It is hoped that this collection of photos will capture and bring back the memory of this very moment in the history of Hong Kong.
The case binding 112-page “City under the Blue Sky – A Collection of Hong Kong Aerial Photos” is priced at HK$105. It is available for sale at all SMO sales outlets, six post offices (General Post Office, Kowloon Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok, Kwun Tong and Tuen Mun Central), certain local bookstores and the Online Government Bookstore (https://www.bookstore.gov.hk).
