Cadasta Foundation is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day by signing onto Interaction Forum’s NGO Climate Compact: Commitments Toward Environmental Action and Sustainability.
The NGO Climate Compact represents a pledge by over 75 non-governmental organizations’ CEOs to urgently address climate change and our recognition that the environment is central to achieving our missions to serve the world’s poorest and most vulnerable.
Commenting on Cadasta’s Climate Compact commitment, CEO and Interaction Board Member Amy Coughenour Betancourt said “Cadasta is proud to sign on to Interaction’s Climate Compact. Our mission as an organization is focused on advancing land and resource rights for vulnerable communities around the world. That is why this compact is so important to us. We know that we are in a position to do more to address climate change. Signing on is consistent with our desire to protect the very resources that communities need to sustain livelihoods and life.”
Consistent with the recommendations from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), U.N. Paris Agreement on Climate Change and with calls by the broader public on climate action and justice, this compact reflects Cadasta’s commitment to advance the global agenda to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and alleviate the effects of climate change on people with the least power and fewest resources. Signing this compact will inform Cadasta’s efforts to mainstream climate and environmental considerations into all stages of our operations, programming, and advocacy.
On Wednesday, April 22nd, from 11:00-11:45 am the Climate Compact will formally launch with remarks by Mary Robinson, the Chair of the Elders, Former President of Ireland, and Former UN Special Envoy on Climate Change. This online event will highlight how the environment is central to achieving our shared mission to serve the world’s most vulnerable and at-risk communities, and draw connections between the current global health crisis of COVID-19 and the behavior change needed to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
