Washington, USA, 16 November 2006 – For more than 100 years, readers of National Geographic magazine have relied on National Geographic Society, a leader in cartography, to provide the most accurate, comprehensive maps available. Now, for the first time, hundreds of the magazine’s classic supplement maps may be purchased online through a collaboration between National Geographic Maps and Maps.com. The National Geographic Maps Classic Collection can be found at NGMapCollection.com.

The collection, dating from 1891 to the late 1990s, is a treasure trove of geographic time capsules. NGMapCollection.com includes high-quality, poster-sized reproductions of maps of space, the world, global regions, continents, countries, oceans, U.S. states and thematic maps crafted by National Geographic’s world-renowned cartographers.

In the collection are several war maps, including “Map of the New Balkan States and Central Europe,” released just as World War I erupted in August 1914. Of the 30 map supplements the Society published between 1939 and 1945, well over half were related to the geography of the war. Also available are maps that highlight natural and cultural resources, wildlife and peoples of the world.

Visitors to NGMapCollection.com can search for maps by year or select from categories such as world regions, continents, oceans and space. Prices range from $14.95 to $59.95. “From the ‘Map of the Western Theater of War’ in 1918 to the maps of the Middle East in the 1990s, National Geographic has continued to supply timely and accurate maps of all areas of the world,” said Fran Marshall, President, National Geographic Maps.
