< 1 Minute Read

Astroscale UK has signed an MoU with Airbus Defence and Space in the field of in-orbit servicing and space debris removal. The two U.K. subsidiaries will collaborate to address critical space challenges.

By combining their strengths, they aim to enhance space sustainability and extend satellite lifespan. A primary focus is advancing the U.K.’s in-orbit servicing and manufacturing industry, fostering a circular space economy.

Key objectives of the partnership include:

  • Space debris mitigation: Developing innovative techniques to identify, capture, and remove space debris. This is crucial for safeguarding ongoing and future space missions while preserving a sustainable space environment. The collaboration will leverage the Airbus VISPA robotic arm on future Astroscale missions.
  • In-orbit servicing: Creating technologies and solutions for maintaining, repairing, and upgrading satellites in orbit. This will extend satellite life, reduce space debris, and improve overall space operation efficiency.

“By partnering with Airbus, we are taking a major step forward in advancing the U.K.’s leadership in the in-orbit servicing and manufacturing industry. Our combined efforts will not only enhance the longevity and efficiency of space assets but also contribute to building a circular economy in space, where resources are reused and repurposed. This collaboration is crucial for addressing the challenges of space debris and ensuring a sustainable space environment for future generations,” Nick Shave, managing director of Astroscale UK said in a statement.
