A futuristic smart city under way in India

Kolkata, India: The Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) will henceforth plan and execute development projects in the entire 6,000-7,000 hectare area in Rajarhat town in the Indian state of West Bengal, which was earlier under the now-dissolved civic authority Bhangor Rajarhat Area Development Authority (Brada).

Hidco is trying to develop Rajarhat New Town as a futuristic smart city. It is discussing plans on sprucing up civic infrastructure and emphasising on dredging, electricity connections and the sewage system. With multinational IT giants like Wipro and Infosys about to set up campuses in the area, the civic body wants to make infrastructure full-proof.

Hidco has decided to install GIS to have a complete computerized database of Rajarhat. “GIS will be implemented in New Town. This will help integrate the database on the number of house owners, property tax, mutation, building construction as well public utilities. This will help planning services for New Town,” said the Hidco CMD.
