A first for Egypt as Fugro revolutionizes subsea installation for GUPCO

< 1 Minute Read

Fugro hasย revolutionized a subsea installation programme forย Gulf of Suez Petroleum Companyย (GUPCO) withย its innovative QuickVisionยฎย technology.ย Used for the first time in Egypt, the contactless positioning solution replacedย theย conventional survey sensors typically attached to subsea structures during installation.

Under a contract with Dragon Oil (GUPCO),ย Fugro delivered subsea positioning supportย forย theย installation of multiple subsea structures off the coast of Egypt. To meet the requirements for improved safety and lower project costs, Fugroย deployed theirย QuickVision solution.ย Thisย state-of-the art vision technologyย uses a smartย camera,ย attached toย a remotely operated vehicle, thatย can determine the heading and attitude ofย a subseaย structure as it is landed.ย Thisย eliminatesย the requirement to pre-install a sensor package on the structure,ย and retrieve it onceย installationย is complete,ย which reducesย theย time and costsย associated withย a diveย support vessel.

Notingย the benefitsย thatย real-time access to the positioningย Geo-dataย brought to the project, Fugroโ€™s Project Manager, Sherif Abd El Aziz, said:ย “Introducing the power of augmented reality has had aย hugelyย positive impact onย thisย projectโ€™sย delivery.”

Lotfi Ibrahim, Drilling Operation Manager for Dragon Oil (GUPCO),ย added:ย โ€œThe conventional sensor methodย is time-consuming andย is not withoutย risk. Fugroโ€™s QuickVision allowed us to deliver safer and more sustainable operations, and within the desired accuracy. It has revolutionized our subsea installation programmes.โ€
