The Department of Ocean Development (DOD) was created in July 1981 as a part of the Cabinet Secretariat directly under the charge of the Prime Minister and came into existence as a separate Department in March 1982. The Erstwhile DoD functioned as a nodal Ministry for organizing, coordinating and promoting ocean development activities in the country. In February, 2006, the Government notified the Department as the Ministry of Ocean Development (MoOD). Telangana Remote Sensing Applications Centre (TGRAC) is an autonomous scientific organization under Planning Department, Government of Telangana. It is the nodal agency for Remote Sensing (RS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) & Global Positioning System (GPS) applications in Telangana.
TGRAC, before re-organization, has completed about 120 projects in addition to operational projects. Apart from this, it carried out projects such as Command Area Monitoring, Integrated Watershed Management Program and "Integrated Seasonal Monitoring System" whose assessment reports are supporting government to take the decisions.
TGRAC has been providing RS and GIS based services on various applications to departments of the Government like Irrigation, Panchayati Raj, Agriculture, Mines, Rural Development, etc. with a vision to collaboratively develop information system for the State and make it available to all - from policy makers to stakeholders. The Soil & Land Use Survey of India (SLUSI), formerly the All India Soil & Land Use Survey (AISLUS), was established in 1958 as a part of the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare. National-level soil surveys began in 1953, guided by U.S. soil specialist Dr. F. F. Rickens. In 1955, the All India Soil Survey Scheme was initiated under the Indian Agricultural Research Institute.
