Geospatial Strategy for Urban Development Sector of India

Overview

The urban sector contribution to India’s national economy is expected to amount to around 70% of the GDP, 85% of the total tax revenue and 70% of all new jobs created by 2030. Digital transformation tools and technologies powered by geospatial knowledge is key for developing and delivering services for urban development that will raise the quality of life and ease of living in India to global standards.

The newly launched National Geospatial Policy acknowledges the crucial role geospatial technology plays in the development of urban infrastructure, and also lays down enhanced role for urban development stakeholders in the country with regard to geospatial data collection and knowledge creation. The development of a geospatial strategy for the urban development sector - which lays down the vision, goals, and guiding principles; identifies and defines evolving needs of diverse stakeholders, the sectoral directions and priorities; and proposes geospatial solutions to address the evolving needs - will be transformational with regard to the adoption of geospatial technologies and knowledge in the workflow.

The discussion document demonstrates the state of adoption of geospatial technology in the urban development sector in India, the associated benefits and challenges, the impact of the National Geospatial Policy on the urban development sector, and provides recommendations for the development of a geospatial strategy for the urban development sector in the country.
