About The Report

GIS and BIM Integration for Sustainable AEC Industry Practices is a high-level executive report prepared by Geospatial World, in association with Autodesk and Esri. The report highlights the need of integrated geographic information system (GIS) and building information modelling (BIM) solutions to facilitate a data-driven approach to project life cycle management, which is crucial for sustainable project outcomes.

The report also shares a glance of users and stakeholders’ perception on challenges and benefits of using an integrated GIS and BIM solutions throughout entire project lifecycle. It also includes the major market drivers that can facilitate increased use of integrated digital solutions in -project delivery based on findings of a survey conducted by Geospatial World. Additionally, the report also features excerpts from thought leaders’ interviews of construction industry professionals and expresses their view on this much needed integration which is poised to revolutionize the global construction market.

Intro

Key Benefits and Capabilities of Using Integrated GIS and BIM solutions for Sustainable Project Delivery

Integrated GIS and BIM solutions provide digital support for design compliance evaluation, with an array of solutions in the form of non-intrusive measures. Additionally, with the help of BIM solutions, project design assessment and structural load distribution and calculations are becoming both cost effective and time efficient. Integrated GIS and BIM solutions also guide construction and general contracting companies in the assessment of health and safety on-site, and thus help them achieve risk reduction benefits in project deliveries. Subsequently, an integrated solution helps users perform environmental impact assessment for large-scale infrastructure and for industrial projects, which is gradually becoming mandatory in most countries.

Return on Investment of Using Integrated GIS and BIM Solutions

Integrated GIS and BIM solutions give positive ROI globally, as indicated by more than 52 percent of the survey respondents. Interestingly, about 37 percent of the respondents are unaware of the returns on investments (ROI) they generate from using integrated GIS and BIM solutions. Regionally, more than 90 percent of respondents from the North America region believe integrated GIS and BIM solutions have helped them achieve a positive ROI. In the case of respondents from the European region, about 58 percent believe integrated GIS and BIM have helped them achieve positive ROI, whereas 34 percent of respondents are “not sure.” About 48 percent of respondents from Asia and the Middle East also selected positive ROI, whereas 34% of respondents are ‘not sure’.

Integrated GIS and BIM Maturity Model

Assessment of integrated GIS and BIM maturity is critical to evaluate the ability of the project delivery team to perform and meet sustainable project outcomes efficiently. The maturity model has been classified in ranges from Level 0 to 3, based on the application of integrated GIS and BIM solutions in terms of the advanced project workflows.

  • Level 0: Siloed Project Data
  • Level 1: Foundation Project Data Integration
  • Level 2: Intermediate Project Data Integration
  • Level 3: Advanced Project Data Integration
