It’s that time of the year when we buy each other gifts. I’m not sure about you, but I am usually disappointed with my present haul, not a single map or geospatial-related item among any of them… so I usually buy myself a present or two in the January sale!
What I may do this year is to leave this webpage open and keep my fingers crossed! We have a list of some of the great cartography, geospatial and mappy gifts I’ve found on the internet.
Map Clothing
Amazon.com: Two Hemisphere Dress Socks
How about some old-world map socks for those presentations or meetings where your trouser may rise?
Amazon.com: Atlas World Map Tie
When you are due to meet with the project team and want to remind people that you are in charge of maps, what could be better than wearing a tie with a world map on it?
RedBubble.com: The super cool GeoHipster T-Shirt
Are you the hipster of mapping? Would you make maps with a pipe in your mouth while you tease your handlebar mustache? Then this is the T-shirt for you; let the world know how geo-cool you are!
Etsy.com: Aerial Imagery Underwear
Buy these for the map man in your life, and you may find them sitting around in only their underwear a lot more.
Amazon.com: Ladies Map T-Shirt
A great item to wear at any geo-based conference or in the office to remind people that you are the map goddess. Pretty well projected in transverse Mercator.
Etsy.com: I’m a GIS Engineer Ugly Christmas, Jumper
The ultimate in cool, it says everything people need to know; this is not an “Ugly Christmas Jumper”; it reminds people that you are awesome.
Geospatial Related Jewellery
Amazon.com: 18K Compass World Map Necklace
A dual pendant necklace, one pendant is a globe, the other a compass. A great piece of jewelry for any mappy person in your life.
Etsy.com: Silver Map Bracelet
A silver bracelet with a blue and silver globe in the center is the ideal gift for any mapper. Ideal for waving in the face of project managers who ask for the word legend at the top of a map legend.
The Cufflink Store UK: Personalised Map Cufflinks
Select any area, for example, your workplace, where you got married, or simply their favorite pub, and The Cufflink Store will put a map of the area on some cufflinks for your mappy person to show with pride on their shirt.
Amazon.com: Globe Cufflinks
Are you a fidgeter? These cufflinks are tactile, and the globe part can be spun…the perfect way to make a kick-off meeting fly by.
Etsy.com: World Globe Earrings
Show the world (get it?) how mappy you or your mappy person is by wearing these handmade globe earrings.
Etsy.com: His and Hers Silver Map Rings
Seriously gorgeous rings to show the mappy person in your life how much you love them, wish these were available when I got married!
Miscellaneous (but awesome) Gifts
Waterstones: Map memo block
No office desk is complete with some post-it notes, put a map print on them, and this becomes a must-have item.
RedBubble: London Tube Map Notepad
How do you ensure everyone in the meeting knows that maps are your life? Walk in with this London tube map notepad! A5-sized and enough room on the spine for a mechanical pencil.
Ordnance Survey: Great British Colouring Book
It has been proven that coloring helps to reduce stress. Also, a joke amongst cartographers is that it is just “coloring-in,”…so what better than a book of UK maps that needs coloring made by the UK National Mapping agency!
Amazon.com: Denver Whiskey Glasses
Whiskey glasses with an engraved map of Denver (also available for other states), what is not to like?
Etsy.com: Custom Wooden Map
This is a thing of beauty, a custom wood and epoxy map of an area of your choosing. Seeing how beautiful it looks simulating water, I would choose a coastal area and invest in some lights. Any mappy person would love to receive this.
Ordnance Survey: New Forest Map Picnic Blanket
Personal confession, I already have one of these, used as a tablecloth, a blanket, and even in the car. Well printed and also functional (if you live in the UK).
