The Mumbai Coastal Road Project, initiated by Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) in October 2018, aims to build an 8-lane, 29.2 km long freeway along Mumbai’s western coastline, connecting Marine Lines to Kandivali. The estimated cost of the project, considering the delays due to environment clearance issues and COVID-19 crisis is ₹14,000 crore ($2.1 billion).

The first phase of the project, a 9.9 km stretch from Princess Street flyover to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, is expected to be completed by October 2023. The ‘Design and Build’ contract of the project has been given to Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T), an Indian technology, engineering, construction, manufacturing and financial services conglomerate with global operations. It is headquartered in Mumbai.

Scope of the project

As defined by L&T, the Mumbai Coastal Road Project package consists of grade road, transition ramp, cut & cover tunnel, TBM tunnel, reclamation and seawall. This package extends from CH 1+850 to CH 5+900, and is mostly underground road, except entry and exit of the tunnel.

The scope of the project includes survey and investigation including geotechnical investigation, bathymetry survey, topographic survey, hydrographical survey, existing building survey, utilities investigation, identification of underground structures, geological mapping, drainage studies, seismic studies, and existing water wells investigation. Keeping in view the excellent results usually showcased by Trimble’s Tunneling Solutions, L&T decided to use Trimble products for the project.

Excellent outcomes, going beyond the expectations

Trimble’s solutions are well-known for enhancing productivity of professionals working on tunneling projects, and thus became a natural choice for L&T as well for the Mumbai Coastal Road Project. They are using Trimble S7 Total Station with the Trimble Business Center Tunneling module. Using the new Trimble TCU data collector with Trimble Access™ field software, L&T can easily control the total station and manage tunnel information. Traverse and network adjustment can be easily processed with the Trimble Business Center software to ensure high-level accuracy. The outcomes, so far, have been highly accurate. The experience has been immensely satisfying, encouraging L&T to keep the association with Trimble going when more projects reach the phase of implementation.

As Debashis Khan, Construction Manager (Survey) of L&T, who is managing the first phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project, shares, “L&T is taking full license for using The Trimble Business Center Tunneling module. Trimble systems are good because of the high speed of the Trimble products. The imaging facilities are also very good, and the products and software are also very user-friendly. Trimble Business Center is the one stop solution for earthwork volume calculations. Its scanning facility improves the quality & speed of as-built drawings preparation. The Business Center also provides prompt action for customer support & training at site location. We are highly satisfied with Trimble products and intend to use them for our future projects as well.”
