In the wireless Information Society, there exist a strong user need for customised mobile services, and a technology requirement of ways to enable and deliver customised map supported mobile services. The present paper addresses questions regarding delivering location based services. Focus is, in particular, on map based applications. The presentation shall look at what kind of applications (end-user services) will be potentially successful, and what technology is needed to enable customised map supported mobile services – a technology question. The technology question is approached by looking at the design of a component-based mobile service architecture. A look at the software components that already exist for fixed network services is essential.in the context

An important aspect of customisation is related to the sizing of the maps. Representation of identifiers for showing the features on a map has to be addressed under the constrains of the hardware technologies under use and the customisation requirements for the user service application.

An important aspect of customisation is related to the location of the mobile terminal. This location may be measured by GPS or via the network itself. The location information has to be updated and stored in area maps. These maps shall contain the location information of cinema halls, restaurants, banks, automobile service stations . A look at the technology and issues of locality determination for a map based location service application in the context of the available Mobile Positioning Technology is very relevant
