Abstract:
When the concept of GIS started, it was more of a visualization tool for real world maps in digital format. However, GIS developed and evolved into a more distinct technology, and incorporated much more functions, which allow efficient integration with other fields and disciplines. At the same time, the major developments have been witnessed in the field of Information Technology, which influenced GIS development in a similar way as other specialized fields like ERP, CRM, Asset Management, etc.

The integration of GIS should reflect the business strategy of the organization and should be well incorporated with the main business processes there. The integration of GIS could be intra- or inter-organizational. When inter-organizational integration is required, i.e. when different organizations are sharing the same GIS data, the interoperability between various software data formats becomes a major issue to be tackled.

Along with these, the system security, scalability, modularity and the capability to adapt to increasing demands of the users are all major topics of concern to the field of GIS technology.

The present paper focuses on the above issues and discusses the technology by showcasing some sample illustrations and examples based on regional implementations.
