Abstract
Today, there are several low cost softwares that are available on the market that could be used in close range photogrammetry application. Some of these softwares could be used to calibrate the sensor, produce accurate measurement, generate 3D model and apply texture to the model. This paper discusses about the experience calibrating a series of consumer digital cameras of different resolution using low cost digital close range photogrammetric software. Two different test fields were used to calibrate the digital cameras. Convergent photographs and retro-reflective targets were employed in the study. The process of photography was carried out within short period of time and the time for processing the photographs were also carried out within short period time. In this study, self-calibrating bundle adjustment embedded in the software was used. Output of calibrating the digital cameras include the exterior orientation parameters, camera calibration parameters and the object space coordinates. The results showed that the relative precision increases as the resolution of the digital cameras increases. For relative accuracy, the results of the calibration were compared with high-end vision metrology system known as V-STARS. Results showed that the relative accuracy too increases as the resolution of the digital cameras increases. The results from this study suggest that consumer digital camera is potential to be used in many close range photogrammetric applications and when the budget is limited.
