We all love our cities, but wouldn’t it be interesting to view them from different perspectives; see them through the eyes of tourists who surely have lot to say. HINT: This blog is about Airbnb, and you know you love it!

Iโ€™m going to start by saying Iโ€™m a huge fan of Airbnb. Theyโ€˜ve given the word โ€˜lodgingโ€™ a whole new meaning and definitely have built an amazing product and community. Needless to say, itโ€™s my most favourite tool for booking accommodations.

Airbnb is an online marketplace matching hosts and guests in many locations around the world. It has 3,000,000+ listings in 191+ countries worldwide. You can both find a place to stay and at the same time list your place for renting. And itโ€™s always easy to look for a placeย thatโ€™ll suit your needs. To top it all, one can always look at user reviews and ratings, which are incredibly helpful for taking the final decision. Beรฑat Arregi, a data visualisation enthusiast, has taken this feature to the next level in his project titled โ€œCity maps from tourist feelingsโ€. In this project, Arregi has mapped the rating of each Airbnb listing. The outcome is a fascinating visualisation of how tourists perceive various neighbourhoods in a city.

According to Arregiโ€™s offcial site, the raw data for the project has been retrieved from Inside Airbnb and visualized using CARTO. Each point in the map represents an Airbnb listing, and the colour code indicates its location rating: โ— 5 stars, โ— 4.5 stars, โ— 4 stars, โ— 3.5 stars, โ— 3 stars, โ— 2.5 stars, โ— < 2.5 stars. Points that appear faded denote listings with anonymized address, which may be in a range of < 150 metres from the location shown in the map.

And another one for one of my favourite cities in the world. If I had Frank Sinatra’s voice, I would sing the song but since I’m mostly a bathroom singer, I’m just going to type it out. New York New York!
